Production Introduction

Combination of Sound-Absorbing Nonwoven Fabric and Perforated Panels

What is acoustic nonwoven?

It's a specialised type of non-woven fabric produced using a specific non-woven manufacturing process; as its appearance is somewhat similar to that of paper, it is commonly known as ‘sound-absorbing paper’.。Silence Tech acoustic nonwoven is a new product successfully developed by a research team at Shaanxi University of Science and Technology following more than 10 years of research and continuous refinement. It is protected by independent intellectual property rights and has been awarded a national invention patent.。Its raw materials differ entirely from the chemical fibres typically used in ordinary non-woven fabrics; it consists mainly of broadleaf wood fibres and high-grade glass fibres. Despite being only as thick as an A4 sheet of paper, it offers high sound-absorption and fire-resistant properties; under specific conditions, its sound-absorption performance can rival that of 5 cm-thick glass wool.

The product does not age or peel away, making it ideal for installation on the reverse side of perforated wall panels or ceilings for sound absorption and noise reduction in public buildings; many major airports and landmark office buildings in China have adopted this product.

The Principle of Sound Absorption

Find out how acoustic nonwoven converts sound waves into heat energy to achieve highly effective noise reduction

Microscopic labyrinthine structure of a two-component random fibre layer

Its wood fibres and glass fibres—which, following a special process, are evenly interwoven to form a micro-labyrinth structure comprising a bicomponent, random fibre layer with specific airflow resistance—create a structure that is breathable and porous.

Sound Absorption Workflow

  • 1 Sound waves strike the surface of the sound-absorbing non-woven fabric
  • 2 Sound waves excite the vibration of air within the microporous structure of the fibre
  • 3 Relative motion is created between the air and the fibres
  • 4 Due to the viscosity of the air, sound waves constantly rub against the fibres, converting into thermal energy
  • 5 Attenuation of the acoustic energy of sound waves to achieve optimal sound absorption

Why choose a lightweight, breathable design??

The sound-absorbing properties of acoustic nonwoven depend on the vibration of air within the micro-pores of the fibres, which is triggered as sound waves pass through the material. Although lightweight, breathable materials are difficult to manufacture and costly, they provide the optimal conditions for sound wave transmission and vibration. Dense materials, whilst cheaper to produce, create excessive airflow resistance, preventing sound waves from passing through effectively and significantly reducing the sound-absorption performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to your questions about acoustic nonwoven

The sound-absorbing function of acoustic nonwoven is primarily generated by the vibration of air within the micro-pores of the fibres, which is triggered as sound waves pass through the material. This requires the material to be permeable to sound waves and to contain a large number of micro-pores, whilst also possessing a certain degree of airflow resistance to create the conditions necessary for air vibration. Materials that are both lightweight and breathable are difficult to manufacture, resulting in low efficiency and high costs. From a manufacturing perspective, dense materials are easier to produce and less costly; however, they also result in excessively high airflow resistance, preventing sound waves from penetrating or allowing only minimal penetration. Consequently, the sound-absorption performance is inevitably significantly reduced or virtually non-existent.

Acoustic nonwoven is generally applied to the back of perforated panels; it can be fixed in place using glue, or you can use acoustic paper products that come with their own hot-melt adhesive and apply them to the back of the perforated panels by heating them.

Common perforated ceiling panels primarily utilise a single aperture to form a Helmholtz resonator, whilst the numerous apertures in the perforated panel create a Helmholtz resonance system to achieve sound absorption; however, the system formed by the perforations is selective with regard to sound wave frequencies. Applying sound-absorbing nonwoven to the reverse side increases acoustic resistance, broadens the sound absorption frequency band, and significantly enhances noise reduction performance.

Sound-absorbing nonwoven is generally used in public buildings with high footfall or where there are stringent requirements regarding the acoustic environment, such as airports, office blocks, underground stations, hospitals, conference centres, laboratories and enclosed sports venues.
